Linux is an operating system that was initially created by the student, Linus Torvalds,in Finland. Torvalds had an interest in creating a UNIX like system, and decided to develop a system that was better than the one he was using. At that time, only commercial organisations could afford to purchase UNIX. He started his work in 1991.The current version is 2.4 which was released in January 2001 and development is ongoing. Linux is developed under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone. This however, doesn't mean that Linux and its assorted distributions are free -- companies and developers may charge money for it as long as the source code remains available. Linux can be used for a many purposes including, software development, web and network servers and as an end-user platform or operating system. Linux is often considered an excellent, inexpensive alternative to other operating systems. Since Linux is freely available, it has become more popular and many of software developers and programmers have taken Linux's source code and adapted it to meet their individual needs. At the moment, there are many ongoing projects to port Linux to different hardware configurations and functions. Linux has an official mascot, the Linux Penguin, which was selected by Linus Torvalds to represent the image he associates with the operating system he created. Although many flavours or distributions exist, there is heated debate about the "best" version.
